Further information acquired by WCNC Charlotte identified the deceased as 54-year-old Anilkumar Patel and Pankaj Patel. Occurring around 1 p.m. along Eddleman Road, near I-85 and Bradford Drive, the shooting took place near the old Lamplighter Inn, a property mired in controversy after its closure and failed transition to housing for the homeless.
The Lamplighter Inn, once a beacon for the proposal of nurturing transitional housing, now sits as a marker of unfulfilled promises and tragedy. A witness from the construction site, seemingly at odds with the violence, provided a chilling account of the event, "so one black car come turn around got out and shoot it seven times, the bullet and shoot it on the floor two," according to a WSOCTV interview with a construction worker. Nearing the autumn of his years, Kenneth Burden, a local resident, voiced his fears, "I’m 68 years old, I’m out here fearing for my life" he told WSOCTV.
