The N.C. Department of Transportation and the N.C. Turnpike Authority are seeking public input on proposed improvements to Interstate 77. As per NCDOT, the project covers an 11-mile stretch from the South Carolina border to the I-277/N.C. 16 interchange in Charlotte. Known as “I-5718,” the project is part of the State Transportation Improvement Program, which runs through 2035. Discussions about the project have been ongoing since 2014 and are now moving forward for public review.

According to a press release, the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO) approved a Public-Private Partnership model last year to support collaboration between government and private entities on the project. The outlined priorities include expanding both express and general-purpose lanes while keeping toll rates manageable, promoting competitive bidding, improving transparency throughout the process, and incorporating transit-related benefits. Specific details on how these priorities will be implemented are still being developed.

Planned improvements for the I-77 South corridor include adding two express lanes in each direction, building direct connectors to improve interchange flow, upgrading bridges, and creating easier access to the new express lanes. The project also includes sidewalks, bikeways, and shared-use paths to enhance accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists.

NCDOT has conducted extensive outreach, hosting 25 small group meetings and engaging over 800 residents in discussions about the project. Two additional public meetings are scheduled for November in central Charlotte. The meetings on November 12 and 13 will include auxiliary aids and services for attendees with disabilities, and Spanish language assistance is available by phone.

Those unable to attend or seeking additional information can access detailed resources on the NCDOT website.
