Libraries are not just about books and silence—a network of Friends groups are the pulse behind the scenes, ensuring that our community spaces thrive with resources and support. This October 19-25, the Chatham County Public Libraries are gearing up to celebrate the 20th National Friends of Libraries Week, a nod to those who bolster our shelves and programs with their time and donations.
The importance of these groups cannot be overstated. Over the years, Friends groups have not only bolstered the collection with new books and DVDs, but they've also been critical in securing new furniture, funding vital staff training, and standing up for the library budget. Despite consistent challenges, they've shown up with both resources, and voices, to advocate for the libraries we cherish.
Christy Bondy, Director of Chatham County Public Libraries, underlines the significance of this week-long celebration. "We want to invite Chatham community members to join their local Friends group and make a difference," Bondy told Chatham County Public Libraries News. She adds, "Becoming a Friends of the Library member is a terrific way to make new friends of your own, give back to our community, and make your local library even better."
