In recognition of October's Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Chatham County is rallying its community to both remember and uplift those impacted by domestic violence by holding a candlelight vigil. According to an announcement by the Chatham Diversion and Advocacy Programs (CDAP), the vigil aims to provide a space for remembrance, survivor support, and community education on this grave issue.
The event, slated for October 22 between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., will take place at 223 N. Chatham Ave., Siler City, NC, where local residents will be offered light refreshments and hot beverages as they join hands in acknowledgement of the lives touched by domestic violence; candles will be lit as a symbol of shared hope and resilience. In a statement obtained by the Chatham County website, Edna Villaseñor, a Domestic Violence Advocate with CDAP, explained, "This vigil is a time for reflection, healing, and collective strength," she continued, emphasizing the therapeutic community ethos by adding, "We want every survivor to know they are not alone, and every life lost will be honored with purpose."
The upcoming vigil in Chatham will feature speeches from domestic violence advocates and local officials. The event will honor those who have lost their lives and highlight the need for continued resources and support for survivors of domestic violence.
