In a disturbing pattern of violence against women in Chicago, a second victim has come forward with claims of being randomly assaulted by a man who is believed to be the same individual involved in a similar unprovoked attack earlier this month. According to a report by CBS Chicago, the 26-year-old victim, who chose to remain anonymous for safety concerns, described being punched by a man as she exited the Metra 35th Street station. "I'm just glad that he didn't break my jaw, or stab me, or… worse," she told CBS Chicago. The attacker, seen carrying a knife, fled after striking, leaving the woman and the other witnesses in a state of shock.
Earlier this month, The Chicago Sun-Times had reported on a similar attack involving Lynsy Howard, 36, who was struck by a man near Union Station, a hit which caused bruising and emotional trauma. Howard's situation was photographed by her friend, and this image became the indisputable connection between the two cases, as the second victim recognized the assailant's attire from the photo shared by Howard's friend on social media. Both images depict the man wearing a black wool cap, thin wire glasses, and headphones. Despite the striking resemblance between the two situations, Chicago police have yet to confirm whether the assailant is indeed the same individual in both cases.
The women, united by unfortunate circumstance, have responded to their shared ordeal by engaging in a personal investigation to inform the public and aid law enforcement in the apprehension of the alleged serial assailant. This effort emphasizes their resolve in the face of fear, one they should not have to bear. The 26-year-old survivor expressed to CBS Chicago that her commute had been irrevocably altered: "I make the commute to work pretty often. I'm scared to run into him again," an unsettling testament to the erosion of security that public transit passengers, especially women, are contending with. As a result, she is now dependent on ride-sharing services to travel, a costly alternative to her usual commute by train.
In a separate incident reported by The Chicago Sun-Times, another woman was punched in an attack at the CTA Red Line Loyola station. Derek Rucker, 37, of Blue Island, was arrested and charged with two misdemeanor counts of battery in connection with this incident. However, the police have not drawn any formal connections between Rucker's actions and the assaults near Union Station and the Metra station.
The Chicago Police Department and Metra Police have not yet responded to inquiries regarding the potential connection between these cases, and the victims wait for an arrest in these instances and for a restoration of peace to their daily journeys.
