The Chicago Police Department has issued a community alert detailing a recent series of strong-arm robberies in several high-traffic neighborhoods, including Grant Park, Millennium Park, the New Eastside, the Chicago Loop, and the Magnificent Mile. According to the alert, these incidents have targeted individuals alone on park property, with the assailants utilizing physical force to steal property, notably gold chains and necklaces.
These crimes have been concentrated in the 1st (Central) District and the 18th (Near North) District, with multiple incidents reported at various times and locations across the affected areas – stretching from early August to mid-October. One such incident occurred on the 1100 block of S. Columbus on August 1, 2025, at 9:30 p.m. and was just the beginning of a spree that has included numerous occasions like the one on the 700 block of N. State St on October 10, 2025, at 12:20 p.m.
The offenders have been described as one to four Hispanic men and women, aged between 20 and 40 years old, and an African American male clad in a black t-shirt, blue jeans, and white gym shoes. The detailed description provided by the Chicago Police aims to increase public vigilance and aid in the identification and apprehension of the individuals responsible for these robberies.
In response to the increase in robbery incidents, law enforcement has advised the public to remain alert, especially those residing or working in the highlighted areas. "Be aware of this crime and alert family/friends/co-workers who live or frequent the area," the alert cautions, also suggesting the use of the buddy system for those walking alone and emphasizing the importance of staying in open, well-lit, and well-traveled areas. Additionally, if confronted, individuals are advised to remember any unique physical characteristics that could help identify the assailant, but under no circumstances should they attempt to pursue a fleeing suspect.
With the community on high alert, the efficacy of these measures will depend on the collective efforts of both the city's residents and its protective services to mitigate the risk of robbery and ensure the safety and security of the citizens. For anyone witnessing suspicious activity, the Chicago Police Department urges immediate reporting to help deter further incidents and aid in the investigation of the ongoing crime wave.
