
The City of Mesa's Public Information and Communications Department recently garnered the prestigious Communications Team of the Year award at the PRSA Phoenix Chapter's Copper Anvil Awards, as reported by MesaNow. Further burnishing its reputation, the department left the ceremony with a total of six awards, acknowledging its outstanding work in the public relations realm and setting a high benchmark for government communications.
In the words of City Manager Scott Butler, These awards reflect Mesa's commitment to open government and transparent communication, underscoring an ethos embraced by a department that prides itself on bridging the informational divide between city officials and citizens, Butler stressed the role of the communications team in spearheading government transparency initiatives and their effectiveness in disseminating clear, accurate information about services and opportunities within the city. Balancing efficiency and innovation, the 15-member crew has managed to effectively navigate various channels ranging from routine public relations to bilingual engagement, even with a modest budget at their disposal.
According to MesaNow, communications strategies have been lauded for reflecting the city's core values of knowledge, integrity, and respect. Ana Pereira, the Communications Director, highlighted the dedication and creative spirit imbuing the team's efforts, "Every member of our team brings creativity, strategy and passion to telling Mesa's story." This team spirit evidently paid off as they were praised for crafting a trusted brand identity for a city of more than 500,000 residents, where their work through campaigns, videos, social media posts, and press releases all share the common thread of their unwavering commitment to excellence.
The team's 2024 initiatives not only secured the Communications Team of the Year honor but also Copper Anvil Awards across several categories, including Integrated Communications for their efforts in the Mesa 2024 Election and a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan by the Transportation Department. The City of Mesa Transportation Department was also recognized with an Award of Merit for the plan meant to enhance city-wide safety. According to MesaNow, these recognitions cement Mesa's place as a paragon of authentic, data-driven storytelling and a statewide exemplar of transparent municipal communication.
