As the high pressure that's given Cleveland a string of sunny days sails off into the Atlantic, locals might want to hold onto their hats. As the National Weather Service in Cleveland reports, changes in the weather pattern mean increased dewpoints and a lead-up to likely precipitation across the region. Forecasters are looking at a cool, gusty, and wet transformation as a swift-moving cold front prepares to ripple through Ohio on Tuesday, kicking up winds and rain showers in its wake.

Monday night will kick-start the meteorological revamp. The buckling of a stubborn upper ridge and a southwest flow aloft are expected to "usher in an increase in surface/low level dewpoints, setting the stage for POPS increasing across the area," according to the NWS Cleveland. A frontal system, swinging down from Canada into the Great Lakes, will drive showers and a few non-severe thunderstorms along its leading edge. The added convective oomph to come ahead of the cold front means Tuesday will still be warm but on the wetter side.

The showers are expected to exit Tuesday night hastily, but the bluster sticks around. Winds from the north will trail the cold front, and temperatures will dip significantly. "Strong Canadian high pressure builds into the Great Lakes," says NWS Cleveland, nodding to the return of calmer weather after the front's passage. The mercury will take a notable tumble come Wednesday night. Protected valleys and rural spots could see the season's first frost, with some pockets possibly even dropping "below freezing temperatures."

Skies over Lake Erie will likely stay serene beyond the middle of the week as high pressure prevents significant disturbances. NWS Cleveland forecasts a gradual warming trend as the high drifts towards New England. By Thursday, Cleveland should experience temperatures creeping back up, hopefully reaching more agreeable readings in the mid-60s to lower 70s by week's end. For mariners, however, heads-up because "winds will have a notable increase behind the cold front," necessitating a Small Craft Advisory with waves potentially hitting the 4-6 feet mark. Things on Lake Erie should settle down closer to the weekend.

So, while bluster and showers are set to disrupt the tranquility of the region's recent weather momentarily, residents look to have just a short-lived reprieve from the crisp autumn conditions Northerners are accustomed to. It seems that for Cleveland, the rollercoaster ride of early October weather is far from over, but as is often the case with Mother Nature's caprice, it's another reminder to enjoy the sunshine while it lasts.
