College Station has just been recognized as a Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community by Travel Texas, as announced by Governor Greg Abbott. The certification acknowledges the city's commitment to promoting tourism as a key economic driver. According to a statement released by the Governor's office, Abbott noted, "Tourism is critical to both our local and state economies." He praised the city's efforts, which contribute to the almost $200 billion in annual economic impact and the support of 1.3 million jobs across Texas.
According to the Office of the Texas Governor announcement, Senator Charles Schwertner celebrated College Station's unique capacity for combining "connection, culture, and creating core memories." The city now boasts the distinction of being a triple threat in Texas's friendly certifications: it's Film Friendly, Music Friendly, and now, Tourism Friendly. Abbott encouraged other communities to participate and apply for the certification, to bolster tourism and jobs throughout the state.
Adding to the accolades, Representative Paul Dyson touted College Station's unique qualities. He said, “As a Film Friendly Texas, Music Friendly Texas, and now Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community, College Station continues to set itself apart.” Representative Trey Wharton also endorsed the sentiment, emphasizing the pride and bright future of their community in light of this achievement.
College Station Mayor John Nichols also spoke about the importance of tourism as a cornerstone of their economy and identity. According to the Office of the Texas Governor, Visit College Station Tourism Committee Chair Cortney Philips shared her excitement, "Receiving the state's Tourism Friendly Texas certification is an exciting and meaningful milestone for Visit College Station," and detailed the commitment of her team to create a hospitable experience for visitors. The program, available to local governments or non-profit organizations, focuses on establishing critical relationships for tourism development, educating about tourism's significance, and learning about state support for such initiatives.
Travel Texas, which operates under the Governor's Texas Economic Development & Tourism Office, plays a strategic role in increasing Texas's visibility as a travel destination. It aims to bring out-of-state and international travel to Texas, in turn creating revenue and jobs.
