Five individuals connected to the "South American Theft Group," a Colombian theft ring operating in Central Florida, were arrested for a series of burglaries targeting Asian business owners. According to ClickOrlando, this group engaged in weeks of surveillance, often masquerading as landscapers to monitor routines and lay plans for burglary.
Their activities came abruptly to an end on Monday when an OCSO drone captured footage of two suspects breaking into an Orange County home. The surveillance operation allowed deputies not only to observe the burglary but to coordinate a subsequent takedown in Osceola County, leading to the arrest of all five suspects. These individuals now face charges of burglary, grand theft, and criminal mischief, with ICE detainers also placed on them, as reported by ClickOrlando.
Among the arrested are Wendy Farias-Suarez, Johan Beltran-Prieto, Laura Pedraza-Sarmiento, Julio Lozano-Trujillo, and Elkin Cubillos-Jimenez, all residents of Kissimmee, Florida. Details provided by FOX 51 include the retrieval of stolen items such as Louis Vuitton purses totaling $11,100 in value, luxury shoes, and $10,000 in cash.
Victims like Le Trinh, owner of SNS Spa Nail Supply, were unaware they were being so closely watched. "The first time when I [returned] to my house, when I saw the window broken and my door open, I feel like my heart jumped outside [of my body]," she said, as FOX 51 reported.
While the number of burglaries committed by this group in the region and the full extent of their targets remain unknown, what is clear is the impact of their actions. As for the suspects, it remains to be seen when, or if, ICE will assume custody following their arrest and detention in Osceola County Jail.
