Colorado's arts and culture scene is set to receive a significant boost with the certification of seven new Creative Districts across the state. Governor Polis and the Colorado Creative Industries (CCI) division of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT) announced the expansion, which aims to create jobs and strengthen the local economies through arts and culture. The certification program recognizes the role that these creative hubs play in bolstering community identities and economies. "In Colorado, Creative Districts play an incredibly important role in supporting our thriving and growing arts and culture economy in Colorado," Governor Polis said, according to the Colorado Governor's Office.
The designated areas are spread across the state, including locations in Boulder County, Jefferson County, La Plata County, San Juan County, and Summit County. The new Creative Districts are the Estes Arts District, Evergreen Creative District, Ignacio Creative District, Lyons Creative District, North Boulder (NoBo) Art District, Silverthorne Creative District, and Silverton Creative District. Eve Lieberman, OEDIT Executive Director, emphasized the importance of these districts, stating, "By investing in these creative hubs, we are not only supporting artists and entrepreneurs but also strengthening the unique identity and economic vitality of our communities," as per the Colorado Governor's Office.
The creative industries in Colorado are a formidable part of the state’s economic landscape, contributing $19.7 billion or 3.7% to the state’s economy, as well as supporting over 121,000 jobs. With this new addition, Colorado now boasts 37 certified Creative Districts, each required to show a comprehensive plan for success, including local government recognition, diversity in creativity, sustainable funding, and full-time dedication from staff. CCI Director Josh Blanchard welcomed the new districts, saying, “Each new district shows a strong local commitment to arts and culture, backed by a strategic plan that guides their long-term success and impact,” as obtained by the Colorado Governor's Office.
