The blatant disrespect for wildlife regulations has resulted in a heinous string of poachings in Las Animas County, Colorado. Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials are on the lookout for information after four large bull elk were found illegally shot and abandoned on separate ranches throughout the county. With the incidents occurring on September 13, 26, and 27, near Stonewall and Picketwire, authorities are urging the public to come forward with any potentially helpful details. Colorado Parks and Wildlife reported the unfortunate series of events.
In a grisly showcase of disregard, one elk was found completely abandoned; another was wounded and subsequently euthanized; a third was left with the backstraps removed, and the fourth, most disturbingly, was decapitated, its head removed with no meat harvested. "These were senseless and disgraceful acts which demonstrate a complete disregard for Colorado wildlife," said Jim Hawkins, CPW Assistant Chief of Law Enforcement and Operation Game Thief Coordinator, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
Authorities are currently seeking tips, which could lead to a citation or an arrest, prompting them to offer a $1,000 reward. Individuals can anonymously report any leads to Operation Game Thief at 1-877-265-6648 or via email at [email protected]. Furthermore, those willing to provide testimony that results in charges could benefit from a hunting license or preference points. This initiative not only helps in bringing the culprits to justice but also supports ethical hunting practices.
