In a move set to improve infrastructure in Pierce County, officials have announced the arrival of Comcast’s fiber broadband at Pierce County Airport-Thun Field as of October 3. The installation of this high-speed Internet service is intended not just for connectivity but also as a catalyst for economic growth within the airport's business community.
According to a release from Pierce County, the project was a collaboration between the county and Comcast, with the latter constructing the necessary infrastructure. Bringing services from Xfinity and Comcast Business, these developments promise to enhance the efficiency of operations at the airport, lying five miles from downtown Puyallup, trodden by commuting businesses including fixed base operators and a variety of airport-specific enterprises. Councilmember Dave Morell of District 1 elaborated that "This essential service will enhance connectivity and support economic development at the airport," recognizing the airport's strategic importance.
Pierce County Airport-Thun Field, which serves as a hub for transportation and emergency services in central Pierce County, has welcomed this technological upgrade as part of a broader scheme to bring better broadband access to undervalued regions. The partnership between Pierce County and Comcast signifies an investment exceeding $700,000, bolstering the fiber network's reach. Funded through a public-private partnership, the county devoted $125,000 of federal money via the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, specifically earmarked in the Pierce County Council's 2024-2025 Biennial Budget for such forward-thinking endeavours. As "Pierce County has been working to modernize the infrastructure of our airport to support businesses and tenants and prepare Pierce County Airport-Thun Field for the future," Councilmember Dave Morell asserted.
