Commerce City officials have announced a planned clean-up of the encampment area at 6000 Dexter Street, citing health and environmental concerns. The official notice posted by the City of Commerce City claims the accumulation of trash, hazardous materials, and other harmful activities necessitates the intervention.
Those currently residing in the area have been given until October 9 to vacate, before the scheduled cleaning between October 10 and 15. While destined to collect trash and biohazards, the city is also responsible for storing important personal belongings of the encampment's residents. According to the City of Commerce City, items like identification cards, birth certificates, and other valuable documents will be held for 30 days. Personal possessions that pose a threat to public health or safety, however, will not be collected.
In efforts to assist those displaced, the City has arranged for personal property to be reclaimed by appointment with CCPD Property and Evidence at 303-289-3657, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The notice also mentions the offer of transportation help, urging inhabitants to call Community Well-Being for support.
Unattended and uncontaminated belongings of apparent value are intended to be collected and stored by the City. Items not claimed within 30 days will be disposed of. To discuss retrieval, residents can connect with a city employee by calling, as indicated in the notice, the City's Community Well-Being line. The clean-up effort, while highlighting public health concerns, holds the possessions of the community's most vulnerable in limbo.
