Last night's tranquility in East Baltimore was broken by the sound of metal grinding as a CSX train derailed, with 18 cars slipping off the rails. The incident, which occurred around 10:06 p.m. near the 5100 block of Pulaski Highway in the Bayview Yard, was promptly attended by the Baltimore City Fire Department, as reported by CBS Baltimore. No injuries were reported, and luckily, there was no fire, leakage of hazardous materials, or threat posed to the nearby community.
The details are sparse, yet the implications are wide, causing a ripple of concern across the area; among the 18 cars that veered off their set paths, 15 were empty and three were loaded. CSX has taken control of the situation, dedicating its crews who remained on scene well into the morning to efforts directed toward clearing the debris and repairing the affected pieces of track.
The cause of the derailment is currently unclear, and investigations are underway to understand what led to this significant but non-catastrophic event. According to WBALTV, the Baltimore City Fire Department, which responded swiftly to the incident, has confirmed that no hazardous material cars were involved.
