A Dallas Police officer has found himself on the other side of the law after being arrested on a theft charge. Senior Corporal Shawn Freeman has been charged with theft of property valued between $2,500 and $30,000. This charge is categorized as an enhanced third-degree felony, as reported by the Dallas Police Department.
Senior Corporal Freeman, who has been with the department since December 1995, surrendered himself to the Dallas County Sheriff's Department on Wednesday. Currently assigned to the North Central Patrol Division, Freeman is now temporarily relegated to administrative leave as he awaits the conclusion of an internal investigation.
The internal inquiry into Freeman's activities aims to thoroughly scrutinize the circumstances that led to the accusation of theft. While the details of the theft itself have not been publicly disclosed, the arrest brings to light once more the issues of accountability and ethics within police departments. The Dallas Police Department appears committed to addressing such concerns transparently, as evidenced by their immediate action to place Freeman on leave post his surrender.
