A fatal wrong-way crash happened early on Tuesday on the Katy Freeway. The collision happened just after midnight and involved a BMW sedan and a Tesla Cybertruck, closing eastbound lanes near Washington Avenue until about 6 a.m. Investigators said the BMW was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes when the crash occurred. One driver died and another was critically injured, according to KHOU.
Police and firefighters responded to a crash with heavy vehicle damage and fire. Click2Houston reported that the Cybertruck’s front end was “completely ripped off” and the vehicle was facing the wrong direction after the first impact. After the collision, the BMW hit an 18-wheeler, stopped on the freeway shoulder, and caught fire. The BMW driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Their identity has not been released pending notification of family.
The Cybertruck driver was taken to a hospital in critical condition. The driver and passenger of the 18-wheeler were not injured and stayed at the scene to assist. Sgt. Rebecca Dallas from HPD’s Vehicular Crimes Division told KHOU, “it was an extremely violent crash.” Investigators are reviewing whether the BMW entered the freeway from an exit ramp at Washington and Corte, but Sgt. Dallas said, “At this time, we don’t know. We’re still early in our investigation.” The crash and cleanup caused delays during the morning commute.
