A DeKalb County family has taken legal action against online platforms Roblox and Discord, after their son, just 12 at the time of the alleged incident, was reportedly groomed by a predator. The family's lawsuit contends that their now-14-year-old son was induced into sending sexually explicit photos, a grave situation that highlights potential vulnerabilities within popular online gaming and communication services.
The legal filings in a California federal court claim the boy began interacting with a predator on Roblox, before the exchanges shifted to Discord. As reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, the boy's mother, referred to as Jane Doe, is seeking financial damages and a jury trial, expressing that her son has since battled with severe mental health issues, anxiety, trust issues, and a deep sense of lost innocence and safety following the events. Roblox is accused of not implementing, the necessary safeguards to prevent such exploitation, despite multiple warnings and complaints regarding child safety on their platform.
The story of John Doe is, unfortunately, not isolated. Numerous families across the country have brought forth similar accusations against Roblox, as detailed by 11Alive. The platform and Discord are at the center of several distressing incidents involving minors and alleged predators, an unsettling pattern that has emerged across various states. In one such case, Stanley Gipe, the family attorney, described a common predatory method: "Hey, I found someone. She likes me. Oh, look at the picture she sent me. But this isn’t a picture of her. It’s a picture that’s on the internet that this pedophile has gotten and pretended to be this girl. Now it’s your turn — send something back. What do you do? These kids send stuff back, and it turns out to be one of the biggest mistakes they ever make in their life."
In response to the allegations, both companies have emphasized their commitment to safety. Discord, while declining to comment on pending litigation, asserted its combination of technology and safety teams to pre-emptively address policy violations, particularly concerning the spread of grooming and sexual exploitation. Similarly, Roblox insists on the continual enhancement of its safety protocols, with protections like strict chat limitations for younger users and the absence of external image sharing. Moreover, as noted by FOX 5 Atlanta, they pointed to ongoing industry collaboration efforts to create standards and tools for ensuring online child safety, such as the Tech Coalition’s Lantern project and the Robust Open Online Safety Tools (ROOST).
