DeKalb County has lost one of its stalwart figures with the passing of Judge Ronald B. Ramsey Sr. CEO Lorraine Cochran Johnson released a statement mourning the judge's death, describing him as "a devoted husband, father, and public servant whose life's work transformed the legal and civic landscape of our county and our state." According to a statement obtained by DeKalb County's official website, Ramsey was known for his leadership and commitment to justice that was evident throughout his notable career.
Judge Ramsey made his mark not just from the bench, but also as the first African American Municipal Court Judge in the City of Stone Mountain. He served as the Chief Legal Officer for the DeKalb County School District, and notably, a Georgia State Senator for the 43rd District from 2007 to 2015. His efforts modernized judicial proceedings and addressed equity issues, leaving a lasting impact on the legal system. His transition from the Senate followed an appointment by Governor Nathan Deal, where he would oversee the DeKalb County State Court's Traffic Division during the height of a pandemic.
The loss is felt deeply within the judicial community, with Chief Judge Mike Jacobs reflecting on Ramsey's influence. "Ron was not only a colleague but a true friend. His wisdom, compassion, and leadership elevated all of us who had the privilege of serving alongside him. His legacy of service and fairness will continue to guide our court and our community for years to come,” Jacobs said in a statement obtained by the county's website.
Ramsey's passing is not just the loss of a public servant; it's the closing of a chapter for DeKalb County that housed immense progress under his tenure. CEO Johnson states, “Judge Ramsey was more than a public servant. He was a pioneer, a mentor, and a beacon of leadership for DeKalb County. His contributions have strengthened the fabric of our community and inspired countless others to lead with courage and integrity. Today we mourn his passing, but we will forever honor his extraordinary legacy,” as noted by the same release.
The county leadership extends their condolences to Judge Ramsey's wife Doris, their children, and the wider Ramsey family. They've asked the community to remember the family in their thoughts during this challenging period.
