Residents in the Denver area are going to see furry friends receive vital health care, as Denver Animal Protection collaborates with Bergen Spay & Neuter Alliance for a large-scale effort to provide spaying and neutering services to pets in need. As part of the Denver Department of Public Health & Environment, DAP aims to combat shelter overpopulation and promote animal welfare through these upcoming events. The Spay-a-thons are scheduled for Oct. 9-12 and Nov. 6-8, held at the Denver Animal Shelter, and are intended to significantly reduce the number of unplanned litters in the community.
According to the City and County of Denver, the Spay-a-thons have a targeted goal of performing surgeries on up to 100 dogs and 150 cats for each of the multi-day events. The pets for this round of spay and neuter surgeries have been selected through DAP's Community Outreach program, with families having been notified of the opportunity to receive these essential services at no cost.
Spaying and neutering pets is more than just about controlling the local animal population; it's also about improving the pets' quality of life. Kristen Des Marais, Executive Director of Bergen Spay & Neuter Alliance, said, "By spaying or neutering your pet, you'll help control the pet homelessness crisis, which results in millions of healthy dogs and cats being euthanized in the United States each year simply because there aren't enough homes to go around," as per the City and County of Denver. She also emphasized the medical and behavioral benefits these procedures offer.
With veterinary costs on the rise, the timing of the Spay-a-thons couldn't be better for pet owners feeling the pinch. Melanie Sobel, Director of DAP and Denver Animal Shelter, expressed excitement about the partnership. "We are thrilled to collaborate with Bergen Spay & Neuter Alliance to expand access to these essential services," Sobel told the City and County of Denver. She acknowledged the growing waiting list of pet owners eager to responsibly care for their animals but lacking the financial means to do so.
