Early Friday morning, a grim discovery was made in a home in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, where two people were found dead from gunshot wounds to the head. The victims, a 38-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man, whose identities have not been disclosed, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
The Chicago Police reported to the 5600 block of South Normal Boulevard in response to a call of a person shot. A gun was recovered at the scene, and Area 1 detectives have taken up the investigation. Details are still emerging, and the circumstances leading to the shootings are not yet fully clear, though the incident appears to be a murder-suicide.
In a similar incident, Chicago police are investigating a separate shooting in the Englewood neighborhood that occurred just after 2:30 a.m. Area One detectives responded to the 6600 block of South Normal Avenue, where they found two unresponsive individuals, consistent in age with the victims from the Back of the Yards incident, suffering from gunshot wounds to the head in a residence, CBS News Chicago reports.
Despite the similarities in the victims' ages and causes of death, there is no official statement connecting the two incidents. Family members were present at the scene in Englewood but declined to speak on camera, though they indicated to CBS News Chicago that the deaths were a result of a murder-suicide. The Chicago police have not publicly confirmed these family statements, and the investigations in both neighborhoods continue.
These tragedies add to the ongoing concerns about gun violence in Chicago, an issue that has been at the forefront of public discourse in the city. Community leaders and residents await further information as police work to uncover the full stories behind these losses.
