The Utah Board of Higher Education has made its choice for who will lead Utah State University into its next chapter. Dr. Brad L. Mortensen accepted the unanimous vote to become president, taking office on November 10. His appointment, as reported by USU Today, comes after a career highlighted by a focus on affordability and access to education, drawing on his own experience as a first-generation college graduate.
Spanning over 20 years in higher education, Mortensen's record includes landmark initiatives such as establishing the first accelerated bachelor's degree programs within the Utah System of Higher Education. Under the tenure at Weber State University, where Mortensen has served as president since 2019, the dual enrollment program became the largest in the nation among four-year institutions by 2024. "It is incredibly humbling and almost unbelievable as a first-generation college graduate to be named president of my alma mater, Utah State University," Mortensen said, as obtained by USU Today.
Aside from his leadership in academia, Mortensen is recognized for securing nearly $400 million throughout his career at WSU, enhancing various academic, athletic, and research facilities. His efforts include the founding of the Miller Advanced Research and Solutions (MARS) Center, cementing partnerships with legislative, military, and industry leaders.
The Utah Board of Higher Education has expressed confidence in Mortensen's ability to guide Utah State University. "Dr. Mortensen is a visionary leader who understands the potential and responsibility of leading USU," Amanda Covington, chair of the Utah Board of Higher Education, shared in a statement obtained by USU Today. In addition to his presidential role at Utah State University, a search will soon commence for an interim president for Weber State University to maintain the school's trajectory following Mortensen's departure.
"Brad Mortensen stood out for his practical, student-centered approach and his deep understanding of Utah’s higher education landscape," co-chair of the Presidential Search Committee David Huntsman told USU Today. USHE Commissioner Geoffrey Landward also added, "President Mortensen is a remarkable leader and selfless collaborator who always puts students first."
