In a move that signals the end of an era for the District's transportation landscape, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has announced that the DC Streetcar service is slated to come to a stop on March 31, 2026; after more than 10 years in operation, the tram that has become a familiar sight along the H Street Corridor will make its last run, according to the District Department of Transportation release.
The agency is urging current streetcar riders to begin looking for alternative means of transit, highlighting the WMATA’s D20 bus as a viable option, in addition to encouraging the use of other District Department of Transportation-managed transportation methods such as Capital Bikeshare, the details of these alternatives have been laid out on their website for the public to assess.
District Department of Transportation is also making adjustments to the streetcar's operating schedule ahead of its final closure, starting January 4, 2026, the streetcar will no longer run on Sundays and will operate with revised hours from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM Monday through Friday and 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM on Saturdays with 20-minute headways.
In acknowledging the upcoming transit shift, District Department of Transportation expressed gratitude towards those who've boarded the trolleys, worked the lines, and shaped the community around it, "DDOT acknowledges and appreciates the contributions of riders, employees, and community members who have supported the DC Streetcar during its decade of service to the District," a sentiment echoed in their announcement.
