At the Region 19 Starlight Event Center, the 4th Annual EPCC–UTEP Transfer Success Summit convened, uniting over 150 academic professionals with a shared commitment to student success. EPCC and UTEP faculty and staff joined forces to enhance the transfer process, ensuring a more integrated academic journey for students. The summit theme, "Two Institutions, One Journey," underscored the collaborative effort to streamline education pathways from community college to university.
The summit was a vibrant exchange of ideas, aiming at improving the transition for students navigating the complexities of higher education. Sessions offered insights on dual credit and enrollment, financial aid, and curriculum updates. According to EPCC News, Dr. Heather Smith from UTEP highlighted the value of face-to-face interaction among counselors, advisors, and administrators, saying, "These counselors from both schools work so closely throughout the school year that it's good to get them to know each other." She further stressed that the summit was key to developing a cohesive enrollment experience at an "affordable financial price."
Recent changes in the landscape of financial aid were a major talking point, as professionals sought to demystify the process for students. Dr. Smith noted, "There have been a lot of changes to financial aid, so that is a main priority," as per EPCC News. Despite consistent federal rules, the summit addressed the divergent application procedures between two-year and four-year institutions.
The value of such summits lies in their ability to foster ongoing dialogue and collaboration. Dr. Paula Mitchell from EPCC spoke on the imperative of regular meet-ups: "It's very important that we get together periodically to make the transition of our students as seamless as we can," she told EPCC News. Mitchell pointed out the benefits of sharing updates on new courses and degree plan changes, ensuring transparency and preparedness among educational institutions.
