A woman in her 30s died after being stabbed Tuesday morning at the Patriot Palms apartment complex in Northeast El Paso, and police say they already have a suspect in custody. The stabbing happened around 11 a.m. in the 4980 block of Sean Haggerty Drive, near the busy Gateway Boulevard corridor, prompting a swift response from officers and medics.
El Paso Police Department Public Information Officer Adrian Cisneros confirmed the details in an on-scene video update posted to the department's Facebook page, saying the woman was rushed to the hospital with stab wounds but did not survive her injuries, according to the El Paso Police Department. The suspect taken into custody is also described as a woman in her 30s. Cisneros said there is no ongoing danger to the public, and that the department will release further updates later. The stabbing location, first reported at the 4980 block of Sean Haggerty Drive, was independently confirmed as Patriot Palms by Cedar News, which relayed reporting from KVIA ABC-7 pinpointing the complex near its intersection with Gateway Boulevard.
Inside the Complex Where It Happened
Patriot Palms is a single-story, 188-unit apartment community built in 2007 and managed by Tropicana Properties, with unit layouts ranging from one to four bedrooms, property records on Apartments.com show. The complex is also listed by Affordable Housing Online as a Low-Income Housing Tax Credit development, meaning it offers income-restricted rental units to local families under federal eligibility rules. Police said the complex would be closed to the public while the investigation continues.
The El Paso Police Department's Crime Scene and Crimes Against Persons units are handling the investigation, per the department's update. A String of Apartment-Complex Violence in Northeast El Paso
This is at least the third fatal stabbing or dispute at a Northeast El Paso apartment community reported in recent weeks. Just days earlier, Hoodline reported that 37-year-old Regan Anderson was charged with murder and granted a $750,000 bond following a fatal apartment stabbing in the same part of the city investigated by CAP detectives. In late July, a fatal dispute on Fred Wilson Avenue led to a murder charge against 41-year-old David Daniel Hall, and a separate roommate dispute in Northeast El Paso ended in a deadly apartment shooting, according to Hoodline's earlier coverage.
Despite the recent cluster of violent incidents, El Paso remains statistically one of the safest large cities in the country. City figures cited by Hoodline showed just 8 homicides through early July 2026, down sharply from 15 during the same period in 2025.
What Could Come Next Legally
No charges had been formally filed as of the police department's update, and the identities of both the victim and the suspect have not been publicly released. If prosecutors ultimately pursue a murder charge, Texas Penal Code Section 19.02 classifies murder as a first-degree felony punishable by 5 to 99 years or life in prison and a fine of up to $10,000, according to FindLaw. The statute also includes a “sudden passion” provision that, if proven by a preponderance of the evidence at sentencing, can reduce a murder conviction to a second-degree felony carrying 2 to 20 years in prison.
