Early this morning, the Elk Grove Police Department responded promptly to reports of gunshots heard at Monterey Trail High School. The community braced itself for grim news as the sounds echoed in the parking lot, bringing to mind an all-too-familiar scene of distress just at the onset of a new school day. However, this incident, reported on the Elk Grove Police Department's Facebook page, took an unexpected turn.
Upon investigation, it was made clear that the supposed firearm discharges were, in fact, nothing more than a false alarm. The noise, initially thought to rapidly escalate a school day into a crisis, actually came from the loud exhaust popping noises – or backfiring – of vehicles located in the school parking lot. School staff, who were at the scene, confirmed the nature of the sounds, which allowed tensions to quickly deflate.
No lockdown was imposed, a relief in a climate where school safety is a paramount concern, and it was confirmed that all students and staff were unharmed. As a measure to help ease the nerves rattled by the morning's events, and to visibly ensure the ongoing safety of the school's environment, the Elk Grove Police have allocated additional officers to be present on the campus throughout the day.
