A somber investigation is underway following a fatal collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian at a busy downtown San Rafael intersection. The incident occurred on Wednesday and resulted in the death of the involved pedestrian.

According to the San Rafael Police Department (SRPD), emergency services received calls at approximately 10:26 AM about an accident at Second Street and A Street. Responding officers and San Rafael Fire Department personnel attempted life-saving measures but were unable to revive the pedestrian, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The SRPD's Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) was dispatched to conduct a detailed forensic investigation to unearth the cause of the tragedy. Early reports indicate the pedestrian was utilizing the designated crosswalk on Second Street at the time of the collision. The area around Second and A Streets was closed to traffic for several hours following the incident.

The driver involved in the accident has been reported to be cooperating with investigators, and as of now, drugs or alcohol are not believed to have played a role in the fatal event. While the identity of the deceased has not been released, the Marin County Coroner's Office is charged with the task and will do so once the next of kin are notified.
