A tragic incident occurred in Charlton yesterday morning, resulting in the death of one man following a single-vehicle crash. The Charlton Police Department reported receiving several calls about the accident at approximately 4:15 a.m. along Southbridge Road, also recognized as Route 169. Upon their arrival alongside emergency responders, a 2012 Honda Fit was discovered having veered off the road and collided with a stone wall. The severity of the crash suggested that the vehicle had been traveling north before losing control and leaving the roadway.
The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, sustained critical injuries and was immediately taken to UMASS-Harrington Memorial Hospital. Efforts to save him, however, proved futile as he later died from the injuries sustained. As reported by Boston 25 News, the initial investigation suggests the car was traveling north when it left the roadway to tragically strike a stone wall.
The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation by a collaboration of local and state authorities, including the Charlton Police Department, Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office. The area around the crash site was closed off for several hours but was later cleared as stated by Newport Dispatch, with normal traffic resuming at around 8:15 a.m.
