A Fayetteville woman, identified as 19-year-old Destini Rhinada Genwright, turned herself in to police yesterday after being sought in connection with a car crash that resulted in the deaths of three E.E. Smith High School students. CBS 17 reported that Genwright is facing multiple charges, including illegal street racing, careless and reckless driving.
Police allege that on the evening of October 8, two sisters, Destini Genwright (19) and Dymond Monroe (21), were involved in a street race on Rosehill Road, which resulted in a serious accident. According to a statement obtained by ABC11, the sisters were on their way to a birthday party for their younger brother when the crash happened. Three passengers in Monroe's car, all students and football players at E.E. Smith High School with the brother, were killed in the accident.
Following a detailed investigation, Monroe, the driver of the 2024 Honda Civic, has been charged with three counts of involuntary manslaughter and other violations. She was critically injured in the crash and remains hospitalized. WRAL reports that the Fayetteville Police Department confirmed the sisters were racing before the crash that killed students Trevor Merritt, Jai’Hyon Elliott, and Nick Williams. The 2023 Dodge Charger driven by Genwright at the time has also been seized by the FPD’s Traffic Unit.
Destini Rhinada Genwright turned herself in at the Cumberland County Detention Center and was released on a $10,000 unsecured bond, as per ABC11. Police records and evidence collected during the investigation indicate that the accident involved high speeds and reckless driving by both vehicles.
