A fire ignited on the tracks of the former Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit at Universal Studios in Orlando, as confirmed by the Orlando Fire Department. In a statement obtained by WFTV, firefighters arrived this morning to address the blaze, which was reported to have no current threat to nearby structures.
Given the coaster’s status as defunct since its closure was announced on December 27, 2024, the fire’s origins remain uncertain. Firefighters responded swiftly, their efforts documented by Chopper 2, which captured the scene for WESH. The extent of the damage, as well as the cause of the fire, is, yet to be assessed.
The Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, known for its time as a main attraction since its debut on August 19, 2009, was built by German manufacturer Maurer Söhne. The ride's closure came just two days short of its 15th anniversary, and the structure was demolished shortly after its final ride on August 17, 2024, to make room for new endeavors.
Although inactive and scheduled for removal, the roller coaster's remnants became the center of unusual activity with the advent of the fire. Orlando Fire Department spokesperson confirmed, "working a small active fire on the tracks of a closed coaster," indicating a minor event rather than a widespread emergency. Given the ride permanently closed on Aug. 18, the afterlife of this coaster has taken an unexpected turn with this incident.
As the situation progresses, more information is expected to be released. Both WFTV and WESH are closely following the event and will share updates as they become available to the public.
