Scottsdale Police have arrested five individuals in connection with a fatal altercation outside an Old Town Scottsdale bar that claimed the life of a man earlier this month. The man, identified as Thomas John "T.J." Pizzitola, 29, died following a fight that occurred on October 11 near Scottsdale Road and 1st Avenue, as per reports from FOX 10 Phoenix and AZFamily.
According to court documents cited by AZFamily, Pizzitola and two friends were ejected from Pattie's First Avenue Lounge for being unruly, and while waiting for their rideshare, an argument ensued between Pizzitola's party and a woman, subsequently joined by four men, culminating in Pizzitola being sucker-punched, sustaining fatal brain injuries and collapsing to the pavement. Despite an apology and attempt to leave the situation, the altercation pursued by the suspects escalated further, according to authorities.
The individuals taken into custody are Drew Meneses, 24, charged with second-degree murder and aggravated assault; Julius Husser, 27, Tony Becker, 26, and Mark Whitford, 23, all three accused of aggravated assault; and Krista Molina, 27, accused of assault and disorderly conduct, as detailed by FOX 10 Phoenix. In a statement, a prosecutor highlighted surveillance footage capturing the moment of the attack: "During that cellphone video, what you can see is victim #1 standing with his arms to his side, and you can see the defendant walk up behind him and essentially sucker punch him in the head."
The situation spiraled as Pizzitola's two friends were set upon by the other suspects, caught in the turmoil, each trying to defend themselves, as this was a bad night where things were not supposed to unfold this way, Drew Meneses claimed during his court appearance, asserting, "It was not supposed to happen like that at all and there was no malicious intent for that at all" as reported by both FOX 10 Phoenix and AZFamily. Tragically, Pizzitola's injuries proved fatal, leaving the community to question the senseless nature of violence—his organs have been donated, possibly imparting life elsewhere even as his was lost so abruptly.
