Earlier today, a fire swept through an apartment in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, injuring five individuals and displacing numerous families. According to ABC7NY, the blaze erupted around 1:35 a.m. on the second floor of a building on Eastern Parkway. Among the injured, two women, ages 24 and 26, were listed in critical condition and are currently receiving care at Kings County Hospital.
In a statement obtained by ABC7NY, another victim, a 55-year-old woman, was reported to be in stable condition at Staten Island University Hospital, while two others sustained injuries, but are expected to recover. The American Red Cross was on the scene offering support, this included aid to families who saw their homes compromised by the early morning disaster.
The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) disclosed to Brooklyn News12 that approximately 60 firefighters and EMS workers responded to the incident, arriving in 12 units. Their efforts brought the fire under control by around 2:15 a.m. Videos captured at the scene highlighted the urgency, as firefighters helped tenants reach safety amidst the chaos.
Describing the harrowing experience, Anthony, a fourth-floor resident told Brooklyn News12, "I put a towel with water to my mom, and she was shaking so the smoke could not affect her. It’s my mom — I’ll give my life for her." Fire marshals are currently investigating the cause of the fire, officials said, and the path to understanding this unexpected blaze, remains as of yet unclear.
For those affected by the destruction and requiring assistance, the American Red Cross has advised that two households have already been registered for emergency aid, which encompasses temporary lodging and financial help. Residents who have not yet connected with Red Cross responders can call 877-RED-CROSS (option 1) to access the necessary help and begin the arduous process of rebuilding, after the Crown Heights fire's unexpected intrusion into their lives.
