A violent incident unfolded at a Torrance school on Monday, resulting in the stabbing of three staff members by a former student. The Torrance Police Department reported the attack at Switzer Learning Center, a school renowned for catering to students with learning differences. "The stabbing was reported at about 8:30 a.m. at Switzer Learning Center," said Lt. Ahmad to KTLA. The suspect also made alarming threats concerning pipe bombs reportedly planted nearby.
Police have since managed to swiftly take the suspect into custody. Two individuals among the wounded were in critical condition and had to be quickly taken to Harbor General Hospital, while a third was treated at the scene. AIR7 video footage captured images of what seemed to be a backpack and a knife on the ground in the vicinity of the school, located at 2201 Amapola Court, as broadcast by ABC7. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department’s bomb squad has been called in to thoroughly investigate the bomb threats.
Further complicating matters, the assailant attempted, but failed, to stab a fourth victim before fleeing the scene. "The former student who assaulted them, meanwhile, also made threats of pipe bombs placed about a block away at 208th Street and Amapola Avenue," reported authorities, according to KTLA. The public has been cautioned to steer clear of the area while the investigation is ongoing, as advised by police.
Discrepancies between reports have arisen as another news outlet, FOX LA, stated that two teachers were the reported victims in the stabbing incident. The condition of those injured remains unknown as details continue to emerge. The school specializes in education for K-12 students with special needs, and the police have advised the public to avoid the area of Amapola Avenue and 205th Street.
