The Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge is gearing up to honor one of America's most iconic creatures, the American bison, with a day full of activities on Nov. 1. Celebrating National Bison Day, the refuge will offer visitors a unique opportunity to explore the habitat and history of Fort Worth’s own bison herd. According to an article published by the City of Fort Worth, folks can participate in a Bison Pasture Hike, check out Bison Artifacts, or partake in a Bison Meet and Greet.
If you're intrigued by the logistics of maintaining an animal as impressive as bison, "Behind the Fences" at 2 p.m. will demystify what goes on in the bison pasture and how staff members manage the herd. Those interested in joining any of the programs must register online, and general admission is not included in the cost of the program.
The Fort Worth bison herd has a storied past, with its origins tracing back to 1973 when it began with just three animals from the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, as reported by the City of Fort Worth. Today, the herd has grown to 16, managed in collaboration with Friends of the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge and supported by private donations from various contributors. The latest addition to their roaming grounds, the Oak Motte Pasture, will soon be unveiled, offering guests improved viewing amenities from the nearby overlook.
