
A fire broke out today at an apartment building on Jay Street in Freeport, resulting in four people being hospitalized and dozens displaced. According to ABC7NY, the fire started in the basement and caused significant damage across all three floors.
A man in his 50s was found unconscious in a basement apartment bathroom after suffering cardiac arrest and was transported to Nassau University Medical Center for treatment. Three other individuals experienced serious smoke inhalation. Fire departments from Freeport, Baldwin, Merrick, Roosevelt, South Hempstead, Uniondale, and Rockville Centre responded to the fire. The incident resulted in the displacement of 60 residents from 14 apartments, as per Long Island News 12.
The Red Cross is currently providing assistance to those affected at the Freeport Community Center on North Main Street. Officials reported that no working smoke alarms were heard or found in the building.
The fire has resulted in safety issues that require attention. The Village of Freeport's Building Department has been notified and will evaluate the damage and decide when residents can return safely. Investigators are on-site working to determine the cause of the fire.
