On a stretch of southbound I-275 in Canton Township, tragedy struck when an 18-year-old man from Garden City was fatally hit by a car after entering the roadway on foot. The incident, which occurred near Palmer Road shortly before 8 p.m. yesterday, led to the temporary closure of that section of the highway as authorities investigated the scene. ClickOnDetroit reports that the man had parked his car on the right shoulder before walking into traffic.
Michigan State Police have confirmed that one driver managed to narrowly swerve to avoid the pedestrian, but a second driver tragically could not stop in time, striking the man in the middle lane. According to information obtained by FOX 2 Detroit, both drivers stayed at the scene after the collision, which ultimately claimed the life of the pedestrian. He was pronounced dead at the site of the accident.
As part of the ongoing inquiry into this tragic occurrence, "Troopers will interview family members to determine why the pedestrian walked into the roadway," said Lt. Mike Shaw in a statement acquired by New Media Detroit.
