East Los Angeles' Garfield High School students and staff were abruptly moved to an alternate location due to a sizable law enforcement action unfolding in proximity to the educational institution. This precautionary evacuation transpired on a Monday morning and redirected the school community to Griffith STEAM Magnet Middle School. NBC Los Angeles reported that an LAUSD spokesperson attributed the move to "safety reasons" and "extensive law enforcement activity" unrelated to immigration enforcement in the adjacent vicinity.
Details regarding the operation were scant, but what's known came courtesy of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Officers from the Yolo County Sheriff's Department, hailing from Northern California, were busy executing a search warrant at a residence near the school. Serving this warrant, the peaceful morning routines were disrupted, as Garfield High School found itself unwittingly at the epicenter of a major law enforcement operation. ABC7 revealed that the evacuation acted as a proactive measure and requested the public to stay away from the affected 400 block of Vancouver Avenue.
Whilst the specifics of the warrant remained undisclosed, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department did confirm the involvement of other agencies, with a joint task force operation unfolding that incorporated the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and the Office of the State Fire Marsha,l alongside at least one agency from Yolo County. The comprehensive nature of this coalition hinted at the operation's gravity and complexity. KTLA reported a lack of immediate response from the representatives for comment.
Providing some reassurance amidst the chaos of the evacuation, the Sheriff’s Department issued a news alert, quoted by KTLA, stating, "All students and staff are accounted for and transferred to Griffith Junior High School." Despite a heavy law enforcement presence, a semblance of order was maintained as the high school's population was accounted for, seeking refuge in the welcoming halls of another school. Meanwhile, residents and onlookers were advised by the East Los Angeles Sheriff's Station, via a brief Nixle announcement, to steer clear of Vancouver Avenue's 400 block while operations continued.
