Garland residents have an opportunity to do just that with the Tree Power Free Tree program. Sponsored by Garland Power & Light and Garland Parks & Recreation, the initiative is offering free trees for locals to plant in their own yards.
The registration opens at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 8, but be swift – it's only available until they're out of stock. As part of the effort to enhance the community's beauty and rebuild the area's tree canopy, interested parties can register to receive one free tree per household. The available species, including Autumn Blaze Maple and Cedar Elm, are not only aesthetically pleasing but also chosen for their shade-providing capabilities. After registering successfully, the Garland residence will be verified, and participants will receive a confirmation email with a pickup time window and location.
The scheduled day for picking up the saplings is Saturday, Nov. 1. Remember to bring the confirmation email when it's time to collect your new leafy friend. For those seeking further information on the program, there's a hotline available at 972-205-3589.
But planting a tree goes beyond just placing it in the ground. There are strategic considerations to ensure you're fostering healthy growth while avoiding any conflicts with utilities. The City of Garland's website provides valuable tips on new tree planting, which include vital checks for the groundwork before you start digging. By following these guidelines, your effort to beautify and cool your community can also ensure your tree thrives for years to come.
