The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is currently looking into an officer-involved shooting incident that occurred in Stone Mountain, DeKalb County, where a teenage girl was shot by police, as confirmed by the GBI's official press release. The DeKalb County Police Department (DKPD) called in the GBI to conduct an independent investigation into the events that unfolded yesterday afternoon.
According to the GBI, the situation began around 2:35 p.m. when DKPD officers were dispatched to Treehills Parkway in response to reports of an armed person, upon arrival, they encountered two teenagers; one of them a boy, from whom an officer confiscated a gun from his waistband, as the investigation developed a second officer spotted what was believed to be a gun in the teenage girl's waistband and instructed her to drop the weapon. In the moments that followed, "The girl raised her shirt, and a gun was visible. The girl reached for the gun and began to draw it from her waistband. The officer fired their weapon, hitting the teenage girl," according to information from the GBI.
The girl who was shot was subsequently transported to the hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. The other teenager, a boy, has been detained and is currently being held at the DeKalb Regional Youth Detention Center. GBI's press release detailed the preliminary details of the incident, but has not released the names or ages of the teenagers involved.
As is standard procedure in these types of incidents, the GBI will continue their examination into the use of force and once their investigation concludes, they will present their findings to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s office for a comprehensive review, then at that point, it will be determined if the shooting was justified under the law or if charges will be made against the officer involved.
