
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has arrested Chris Johnson, the owner of a funeral home in Douglas, Georgia, on multiple charges including Violation of Vital Records Registration, theft, deception, and forgery. The charges follow an investigation that began after authorities discovered 18 bodies in various stages of decomposition during an eviction at Johnson Funeral Home on October 26, 2024. Families connected to the remains have been notified, though identities are being withheld for privacy, as per the Georgia Bureau of Investigation release.
In addition, James A. Sirmans of Fitzgerald has been charged with insurance fraud and conspiracy. Authorities allege he attempted to collect life insurance by altering a cause of death on a certificate. The Office of the Commissioner of Insurance John F. King also filed charges against Johnson, including Theft by Deception and Forgery.
The GBI Crime Lab is working to confirm the identities of the deceased and verify cremains to ensure they are human remains properly returned to families. Most of the bodies found in 2024 were identified by January of the following year.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials anticipate additional charges. The Waycross Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office will oversee prosecution once the investigation concludes.
