This week marks the observance of School Bus Safety Week, a time dedicated to promoting awareness of student transportation safety. In Germantown and across the nation, the familiar yellow school bus remains one of the safest modes of travel for students. According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, less than 1% of all traffic fatalities involve children on school transportation vehicles. The Germantown Police Department underscored this statistic in a recent social media post, reminding drivers, parents, and students to stay alert and prioritize safety around school buses.
In observance of School Bus Safety Week, which runs from today through Friday, officials are ramping up efforts to remind the community of their shared responsibility in keeping students safe. Authorities are urging drivers to stay especially alert in residential areas during the busy morning and afternoon commute hours.
The focus on safety also extends to parents and students. Authorities are encouraging parents to teach their children about staying alert around vehicles, especially at bus stops. Children are reminded to remain attentive and avoid running or stepping into the road when approaching or leaving the school bus. As stated in their post, “It’s important for all drivers, as well as parents and students, to understand school bus safety."
