Gwinnett County has approved a local hazard mitigation plan to strengthen preparedness against natural disasters. The plan is a joint effort between the county and several cities, including Auburn, Berkeley Lake, and Buford. It outlines potential hazards and strategies to reduce risks to residents and property.
As per the Gwinnett County release, the plan includes adding backup generators at key facilities, improving stormwater systems, and expanding community outreach. It also guides land use, flood risk management, and site design. According to Michael Shaw, Director of the Gwinnett Emergency Management Office, effective hazard mitigation planning can significantly reduce losses from disasters.
FEMA requires counties to update mitigation plans every five years to remain eligible for federal aid and support.
