Authorities in Hawai‘i are probing into a series of brush fires in the Kona region that sparked concern yesterday morning. According to the Hawai‘i Police Department, patrolling officers and fire department personnel responded to a call at 8:01 a.m. and found multiple small fires along Queen Ka‘ahumanu Highway, an area nestled between Hulikoa Drive and Hina Lani Street in Kailua-Kona.
The fires, roughly eight in total, were each contained to an area about 10 feet by 10 feet. Resourceful motorists who witnessed the fires leapt into action to snuff out the flames. Responding units, arriving shortly thereafter, dealt with the remnants and any potent hotspots. Thankfully, no harm came to property nor persons, and no businesses or homes in the vicinity were threatened.
Although the origin of these fires is still undetermined, their suspicious nature has not gone unnoticed. "Police are on heightened alert in light of the current red flag warning from the National Weather Service," said Area II Operations Major Thomas Shopay III on the Hawaiʻi Police Department. The official implored the community to maintain vigilance and to report any peculiar activities.
For those holding knowledge about the events, a line has been cast for information. Officer Kesia Quiocho has been designated as the contact point at the non-emergency number of the department, with police fervently hoping someone in the public eye might help piece together this puzzle.
