Attention shoppers: you might want to check your freezer. The Hawai‘i Department of Health has issued a warning about a recall on Scott & Jon’s Shrimp Scampi with Linguini due to possible Listeria contamination. If you’ve recently snagged a bag of this meal from the freezer aisle, it's time to take a closer look. According to the State of Hawaii, Department of Health alert, the culprit seems to be a batch of linguini supplied by Nate’s Fine Foods that’s got the health department raising red flags.
Before you dig into that pasta, make sure you're checking the lot numbers. Only select batches of the shrimp scampi are affected, and they were distributed nationwide, reaching our local Safeway shelves here in Hawai‘i. Issued by Demers Food Group, entrusting the safety of their products to consumers, taking the troublesome linguini off the supermarket's hands shouldn't pose much of a problem anymore.
Listeriosis is a serious infection that can be dangerous, especially for pregnant people, young children, older adults, and anyone with a weak immune system. Symptoms can include fever, headaches, nausea, stiff muscles, and stomach problems. Health officials warn it can cause miscarriages or stillbirths. Sometimes, symptoms may appear up to two months after eating contaminated food.
If you’ve eaten potentially unsafe scampi, watch for symptoms and contact your doctor if you feel unwell. No illnesses have been reported so far, but it’s better to be safe. Check the recalled product’s lot number and use-by date. If you have it, return it for a refund. If it’s already opened, seal it in a bag and throw it away. Wash your hands and clean any surfaces it touched. For questions, call Demers Food Group at 1-800-239-9731, Monday–Friday, early morning to mid-morning Hawaii time.
