The Hawai‘i Police Department recently held a somber gathering to extend their final salutes to a fallen colleague, K9 Archer, whose years of dedicated service came to a tragic end earlier this month; a private memorial was conducted yesterday at the Police Memorial Wall in Hilo. In attendance were police staff, selected dignitaries, K9 handlers, and speakers, to honor the dog who, over five years, became a pivotal force in vice operations, as reported by the Hawai‘i Police Department's official release.
Tragically, Archer’s death on September 4—marked by controversy after he was left unattended in a police vehicle—has sparked administrative and criminal investigations to determine the circumstances of the mishap, according to the department’s announcement. The canine’s career statistics are notable: he was deployed 169 times and conducted over 3,200 screenings, leading to substantial drug seizures, including large amounts of methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, marijuana, and a significant quantity of fentanyl with the grim potential to kill tens of thousands.
Interim Police Chief Reed Mahuna expressed the profound connection between Archer and the force, stating, "Archer was more than a working dog, he was a partner and protector who played an important role in keeping dangerous drugs off our streets," as noted in the department’s tribute. Vice Section Captain Edwin Buyten reminisced about Archer's dual-sided nature, a driven worker yet playful at heart, as told to the Hawai‘i Police Department.
Addressing the broader implications of the loss, Chief Mahuna acknowledged the emotional impact on the law enforcement community and the public, ensuring continued transparency regarding Archer's death stating, "The loss of Archer has deeply affected our department and our community," Mahuna said, adding that the department will provide updates on the investigation to meet the public’s call for clarity, as stated by the Hawai‘i Police Department.
In closure, the Hawai‘i Police Department extends gratitude toward the community for its support during this time of mourning, as they commemorate the legacy of their loyal K9 partner, Archer, whose service to maintaining safety and justice in the state will be remembered.
