Amid the tranquil beauty of Hawai‘i's landscapes, the serious issue of driving under the influence continues to demand attention. According to the Hawai‘i Police Department's latest report, officers arrested 19 motorists for DUI during the week of October 13 to October 19, 2025. Of those arrested, seven were involved in traffic accidents and one was a minor under the age of 21.

The year-to-date figures suggest a small ray of hope, with DUI arrests down 7.03 percent from last year's numbers—727 compared to 782. Yet, as the roads bear witness to an increase in major crashes, from 790 to 812, accounting for a rise of 2.78 percent, as reported by the Hawai‘i Police Department.

There appears to be a silver lining when it comes to the most tragic outcomes as fatalities experienced a notable decline. So far in 2025, there have been 17 fatal crashes resulting in 18 deaths. This marks a decrease of 22.73 percent in fatal crashes and 25 percent in fatalities, compared with the 22 fatal crashes and 24 deaths reported at the same point last year, as detailed by the Hawai‘i Police Department.

The island has managed to avoid non-traffic fatalities, with none reported so far in 2025, consistent with last year's statistics by this date. In response to these figures, DUI roadblocks and patrols continue to be a fixture across the island, as part of the authorities' ongoing efforts to curb impaired driving and ensure the safety of the public, as per the Hawai‘i Police Department.
