A health concern has emerged in Hawaii's schools following reports of illness and a statewide recall of Meadow Gold Dairy's chocolate milk; nine students at an Oahu school have suffered gastrointestinal symptoms as confirmed by the Hawaii Department of Health (DOH). Given the troubling development, the recall, which was specifically issued for half-pint cartons of the chocolate milk bearing an October 16, 2025 expiration date, has prompted action by the Hawaiʻi Department of Education (DOE) to remove the affected products from schools, as reported by KHON2.

While the sickened individuals at the unidentified Oahu school have yet to require medical intervention, DOH officials continue to investigate the link between the product and the symptoms, which have not necessitated medical attention as of yet, as was mentioned in a statement obtained by Island News; parents and guardians are being urged to contact the DOH Disease Reporting Line if symptoms arise after consuming the recalled milk, meanwhile also the milk has been distributed to over 200 educational institutions across Hawaii including those on Oahu.

The affected chocolate milk originated from both the Big Island and the continent, with Meadow Gold Hawaii taking the safety, integrity, and quality of its products seriously and is thus looking into the issue. With the milk purportedly distributed to a wide range of educational institutions across the state—encompassing elementary to college-level, and both public to private schools—it comes as a relief that the DOE has confirmed only five schools served the potentially hazardous milk, specifics of which were not released. Dr. Sarah Kemble, state epidemiologist, highlighted the importance of food safety, advising, “And that might involve if you open a product and it doesn’t seem right, if the color is different, the taste or the smell is different, texture is different, be cautious, don’t consume that product,” in a statement reported by KHON2.

DOH has not been able to conclusively link the milk to the illnesses, but some symptoms such as "stomach ache, some with vomiting" have been associated with the consumption of the product, Dr. Kemble detailed a KHON2 interview, adding that the affected children shared the same school meal. In a precautionary effort, letters were dispatched to parents by some schools yesterday informing them of the potential issue, emphasizing the critical importance of vigilance and prompt reporting to health authorities to aid in identifying the exact cause of the illnesses.
