As Honolulu drivers adjust to changing road conditions, the Hawai'i Department of Transportation (HDOT) has provided some clarity on the speed limit for Likelike Highway approaching School Street. In a recent announcement, HDOT stated that effective Wednesday, Aug. 13, the speed limit for Honolulu-bound motorists has been increased from 25 mph to 35 mph. This update comes after a careful analysis of traffic data and is designed to improve traffic flow on the route.
While it was initially communicated that this increase would apply to both directions of travel, HDOT has revised to clarify that the speed limit remains 25 mph on the makai side of the intersection. This decision has been made to supposedly make driving safer, considering the area's history with accidents. The department emphasized that "the signage in the area reflects the correct speed limit," ensuring that motorists can be well-informed while traveling.
Further ensuring roadway safety, HDOT has cautioned that this busy intersection comes with its own high-tech monitoring. Drivers should be aware that "all legs of this intersection are outfitted with combination Red-Light and Speed Safety Cameras," looking after both the stoplights and the speeds cars are going. The faster 35 mph limit is what these cameras will be set to enforce on the mauka side, where the new speed is in effect.
With the updated traffic enforcement measures, residents and visitors would need to be sure not to quickly drive over the revised speed limits. As stated by the HDOT, the cameras have been calibrated to sync with the updated speed setting, allowing them to more appropriately capture any potential infractions. Motorists navigating the area will have to remain vigilant to stay on the right side of traffic laws—and the speed cameras.
