The Hilliard Division of Police has launched the Blue Envelope Program, a voluntary initiative designed to support drivers with disabilities during traffic stops. According to a social media post by the Hilliard Division of Police, this program aims to reduce stress and enhance communication between officers and drivers with conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, dementia, physical disabilities, or mental health issues.
The potential lifesaver tucked inside a Blue Envelope includes critical information and accommodation notes that can be easily handed over to responding officers. The Blue Envelope also contains a car decal to notify first responders of the driver's potential need for special accommodations. "Disabilities such as autism spectrum disorder, dementia, physical disability, or mental health conditions may require additional accommodation or awareness during a law enforcement interaction," according to the Hilliard Division of Police. Travis Dresbach, co-coordinator of the Southern Ohio Advocacy Group, explained in a press release.
Residents of Hilliard can pick up their own packet at the Safety Services Building located at 5171 Northwest Parkway. In the words of Dresbach, "It's amazing that something as simple as an envelope can do so much." The sentiment is a reflection of the broader community's push towards a more inclusive and empathetic approach to policing.
