A high school principal from Hillsborough County has found himself on the wrong side of the law, after being arrested for failing to report child abuse allegations. The principal, identified as Jazrick Haggins, aged 42, is at the center of a case involving a 4-year-old victim who was reportedly touched inappropriately by a 16-year-old suspect. This incident occurred in a daycare operated at Spoto High School, as confirmed by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office in a recent social media post.
The investigation into the alleged abuse began on May 9, by detectives from HCSO's Special Victims Section. It emerged that Haggins was made aware of the allegations as early as April but chose to conduct his own investigation instead of reporting the incident to the Department of Children and Families or law enforcement, delaying official intervention for two weeks. A statement on the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Facebook page noted Haggins "acknowledged he knew of the allegations and was conducting his own investigation."
After an arrest warrant was issued for Haggins, the Sheriff's Office, along with the Lakeland Police Department, apprehended him on October 24. He has since been transported to Polk County's Jail. The charges against Haggins revolve around his failure to fulfill his legal obligation as an educator and principal to report suspected child abuse to the correct authorities. This requirement is a critical component of child welfare protocols designed to protect the most vulnerable members of society, and Haggins' omission has brought serious repercussions.
